We had some great questions at the Ask Erika event and over the next several weeks I’ll post the questions and answers. Today’s questions are:

What is protein pasta?

Which are healthier: Apples or Berries? Both are healthy! Both apples and berries are great choices. A medium apple with the skin on is 90 calories and is a good source of antioxidants, Vitamin C, and fiber. A cup of berries is 85 calories and is a good source of antioxidants, Vitamin C, fiber, folate, and potassium. You won’t go wrong with either choice.

How do I get all the nutrients I need daily?

  • Choose whole grains as often as possible
  • Taste the rainbow for fruits and veggies – include as many colors as you can
  • Eat a variety of protein – fish, chicken, lean meat, beans, eggs, and nuts
  • Choose Calcium and Vitamin D fortified dairy products or alternatives
  • Take a good Multivitamin (Check with your Doctor first!)
  • Check out choosemyplate.gov for serving suggestions

What is protein pasta? There are a variety of alternative pastas on the market. Protein pastas are often made with beans, chickpeas, or lentils.  They are higher in protein than traditional pasta, and contain more fiber, less carbs, and some are gluten free. Other pasta options include having a small portion of whole wheat traditional pasta, or if you’re limiting carbs, try spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles. The variety you choose depends on your taste and your goals.
