What’s the deal with functional juices?
A functional beverage is a drink typically intended to convey a health benefit. Functional juices often claim to contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and that they promote gut health and aid in detoxification.
- Whole fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and phytonutrients. Therefore, the juice from these foods should contain the same components, though some may be lost in the processing as pulp and fiber are removed.
- Some companies are adding prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber which can support a healthy digestive tract and a healthy immune system.
- In regards to juice and toxin elimination, there is little research to support the health claims of juice cleanses. Your body does a good job detoxifying on its own!
It’s unlikely there is danger in consuming 100% fruit juice as part of a healthy diet, but there is little evidence to support the idea that it will give you any health benefits over eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.
