Erika’s Post – What is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein that makes up connective tissues in the body. It’s being touted to improve joint pain, reduce wrinkles, promote muscle growth, and manage weight. Collagen is being added as a functional ingredient to smoothies, protein bars, baked goods, teas, etc.
We need to be skeptical about the health claims of collagen. Some studies show benefits, but it’s not clear if the participants had consumed adequate protein in general, they may have gotten the same benefit. Many of the studies are funded by the industry, which runs the risk of bias.
Collagen supplements might not hurt, but opt for natural sources of collagen – bone broth, meat (not organ meats), fish, egg whites, spirulina.
