Erika’s Post – What About Elderberries?
Elderberries and elderberry products are gaining popularity.
They’re touted to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardio-protective, diuretic, laxative, and antiviral properties, as well as the ability to improve blood pressure, lower lipids, promote insulin secretion, and stimulate weight loss.
However, the research to support these claims is limited.
Elderberry extract has been shown to potentially support the immune system by stimulating pro- and anti- inflammatory cytokines.
In another study, elderberry syrup intake was associated with relief of flu-like symptoms an average of four days sooner compared to the placebo group.
And a study in rats with high blood pressure found that taking an elderberry supplement resulted in more favorable lipid profiles.
Here’s the bottom line: More research on elderberries is needed. While some studies have been positive, there is a lack of data on toxicity and possible side effects.
