Erika’s Post – Exercise Benefits your Brain!
Exercise – for your brain.
We all know that physical activity is good for our health –
- prevention and treatment of chronic disease
- reducing muscle loss
- weight management.
Research also shows that physical activity plays a positive role in cognition and mental health in many stages of life.
Studies have shown that maternal physical activity before and during pregnancy improves babies’ cognitive performance in childhood.
In adolescents, the brain is maturing and new neurons are developing. Stress during this time can decrease neurogenesis. Physical activity reduces stresses on the brain, therefore improving academic performance and cognitive function.
For older adults, the risk of developing dementia was 28% less, and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease was 45% less among individuals who were physically active.
