Erika’s Heart Healthy Tip – Olive You!
Olive oil is a staple in the Mediterranean Diet and is well known for its heart health benefits. Did you know there are more than 500 varieties of olives? Their color – green, brown, purple – depends on the length of time the olives are left on the tree to ripen. Beyond olive oil, olives can be enjoyed in stews, salads, pasta dishes, and a few beverages.
Olives are a good source of monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E, fiber, and iron – all nutrients good for your heart!
However, since olives are cured, they are also high in sodium. If you have a history of high blood pressure, or have been told to follow a low sodium diet for any reason, eat olives in moderation and do not add additional salt to meals when cooking with them.
