SPECIAL OLYMPICS SWIM TEAM
Swimmers participating in this program should successfully demonstrate an understanding of the basic technique in at least freestyle or backstroke; must be able to participate in a group, and swim independently without any assistance.
- Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards independently using the following strokes: freestyle (no doggie paddle) or backstroke.
- Tread water for 1 minute.
- Swimmers must be able to follow directions from coaches on deck.
We offer two practices a week to train, improve swimming skills and build endurance. Swim practices are held on Mondays 4:35 pm – 5:30 pm and Fridays 3:50 pm – 4:45 pm at the Deer Path Branch of the Y. The swim team season runs from October through June. Swimmers have the opportunity to compete at the Area Meet, and based on their qualifications, can advance to the Sectional and State meets.
We encourage those who cannot meet the Special Olympics requirements to consider appropriate Y group or individual swim lessons to help prepare them to become a team member.
