Join the HCY Water Polo Club!

Water polo at our Y offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of water polo in a fun, supportive environment that emphasizes skill development, teamwork and physical fitness.

Water polo is a sport enjoyed by girls and boys who are looking to increase their stamina, endurance and overall swimming skills. We teach kids and teens the basics of the game, with an emphasis on the fundamentals of treading water, passing, catching, shooting, and offensive/defensive game strategies. Our approach is to nurture team players, always instilling our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Kids learn drills, the skills and water polo rules, as well as healthy competition.

This is an exciting, well rounded approach to water skills and safety. Jr. Water Polo brings all the fun aspects of the game in a safe, non-contact, shallow-water aquatic experience. Beyond the fun in the water, Jr. Water Polo will provide additional instructional support to those registered for the program that includes on-land skill building, goal making exercises, and Y values discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Play?
There are goals at each end of the pool and the winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals by getting the ball between the posts.
Players are not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool and have to tread water the whole time. Water polo players use a movement called eggbeater which is more efficient than the normal action of treading water.
Players can move the ball by throwing it to a teammate or swimming while pushing the ball in front of them. They can only hold the ball with one hand, other than the goalkeeper who can use both hands.
Do I have to tryout or pass a swim test?
Water polo is a competitive, demanding sport that requires proficient swimming skills. Our philosophy is to be an inclusive program that seeks to develop water polo skills in our community. If a child is water safe, he or she is welcome to join.
How old do you have to be to play water polo?
HCY Water Polo has players as young as six years old, with the age groups for play split from 6-11, and 12 & Up. Please talk to a coach if you are unsure if your player is ready to play water polo.
What equipment do we have to purchase or wear?
Both boys and girls wear polo caps that are provided by the club for official games. Girls also need to wear swim caps. No goggles are needed.
